Kristen Scott of Nuestro Mundo Community School recognized for over 30 years of commitment to students
MADISON — State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly today announced Kristen Scott as the second of five 2026-27 Teachers of the Year. The announcement was made as part of a schoolwide surprise celebration at Nuestro Mundo Community School, a dual-language immersion school in the Madison Metropolitan School District. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, in partnership with Herb Kohl Philanthropies, selects five Teachers of the Year annually to represent elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and special services.
“Mrs. Scott is innovative and determined; she sees challenges as opportunities,” Dr. Underly said. “When she has an idea to improve the school, she will work tirelessly to bring it to life, whether that means securing grants or finding new partners to collaborate with. She is dedicated to making the school a welcoming and inclusive place where everyone feels like they belong.”
Scott is a fourth-grade teacher at Nuestro Mundo Community School, with more than 30 years of teaching experience. She is a previous recipient of both the Bilingual Education Teacher of the Year and the GSAFE Educator of the Year awards, reflecting her dedication to bilingual education and inclusive school communities. Scott successfully launched new efforts to increase family engagement at Nuestro Mundo, strengthening connections between school and home.
Photos from the celebration will be available on Dr. Underly’s official Facebook page.
As part of the recognition, Scott will receive a $3,000 award from Herb Kohl Philanthropies. Additional information about the Teacher of the Year program can be found on the Wisconsin DPI website.
