MADISON — Two Wisconsin students have been named U.S. Presidential Scholars by the U.S. Department of Education, one of the nation’s most prestigious honors for high school students. The award recognizes students for outstanding achievements in academics, arts, and career and technical education.
Joel Michael Janssen from Delavan-Darien High School (Delavan-Darien School District) and Elizabeth Jane Matz from Onalaska High School (School District of Onalaska) are among the 161 high school seniors nationwide to receive the award.
“Wisconsin’s Presidential Scholars have so much to be proud of, and I hope they take a moment to celebrate all the hard work that brought them here,” Wisconsin State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly said. “These students exemplify the hard work, curiosity and commitment to learning that make Wisconsin’s students so special. This honor reflects not only their dedication, but also the support of the teachers, families and communities who have helped them along the way. Congratulations to Joel and Elizabeth on this outstanding achievement.”
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars identifies honorees by evaluating academic excellence, artistic and technical talent, essays, school recommendations, and leadership and community service. This year, more than 6,700 candidates qualified for consideration based on strong performance on exams or nominations.
