Madison, Wis. (September 3, 2026) — As we approach the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum has opened two exhibits remembering the souls lost on that day, honoring all first responders, and highlighting those who were motivated to serve afterward.
The first, Compassion Under Fire: Stories of Combat Medics, fills the front window of the Museum, inviting the public inside to learn more about military first responders, who work under harsh and dangerous conditions, delivering emergency medical care in both combat and humanitarian situations. The exhibit features Madison native Rachael Hugo, a combat medic who was killed in Iraq in 2007.
The second, September 11, 2001: Our Veterans Remember, is a digital exhibit that focuses on reactions taken from oral history interviews of Wisconsin veterans who were on active duty, had recently separated from service, or were contemplating enlisting at the time of the attacks.
The exhibits will be on view through the month of September.

Image of Rachel Hugo of Madison, WI who enlisted with the U.S. Army Reserve in May 2003. Hugo served as a combat medic with the 303rd Military Police Company and deployed to Iraq in September 2006. She was killed in action on October 5, 2007 while in Bayji, Iraq when insurgents attacked her unit using an improvised explosive device (IED).
