More than 250 advocates for people with disabilities and older adults have signed onto the statewide Disability and Aging Advocates for Crowley coalition to help elect David Crowley as Governor. Grassroots advocates say it is a critical time to elect a Governor who understands disability and aging issues and more importantly, will protect essential programs and services.
“We appreciate that David Crowley has endorsed our coalition’s priorities. He has a proven track record in Milwaukee County of investing in the services and programs that older adults and children and adults with disabilities need to live with dignity, independence, and support in the community,” says the group. “We are organizing because people are concerned about the future. There is too much at stake.”
Disability and Aging Advocates for Crowley point to his accomplishments and positions:
- Supports expanding and protecting investments in Medicaid, including Home and Community-Based Services (Family Care, IRIS).
- Strong record of protecting voting rights, including voting by mail.
- Expanded Milwaukee County community-based mental health services and opened a new mental health emergency center; significantly reduced the number of overdose deaths.
- Invested more than $50 million in affordable housing developments in Milwaukee County and reduced homelessness by 42%.
- Oversaw development of a fully accessible human services building.
- Expanded enrollment to 2,500 in Milwaukee County’s Birth to Three program to provide early intervention services for young children with delays.
- Invested in 26 new positions at the Milwaukee County Aging and Disability Resource Center to support a 75% increase in calls.
- Oversaw 400% growth of the County’s Children’s Long-Term Support (CLTS) program, which provides in-home supports for children with disabilities and their families.
- Completed a $4 million renovation of the Clinton Rose Senior Center to include enhanced health and community-building opportunities for older adults. Expanded county-wide access to nutrition services.
- Supports 90% state reimbursement for special education costs.
- Has a record of protecting voting rights and will push for nonpartisan redistricting.
