A majority of federal judges on the Eastern District have declined to keep former GOP AG Brad Schimel in his role as interim U.S. attorney after his appointment expires March 17.

In a statement posted on the court’s website, the judges said the move was intended as “no criticism or commentary on the performance or qualifications of the Interim United States Attorney or any of the attorneys in the United States Attorney’s Office.”

U.S. AG Pam Bondi appointed Schimel to the role last fall. That came after the Federal Nominating Commission that U.S. Sens. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, and Ron Johnson, R-Oshkosh, have used to identify candidates for appointments failed to reach a consensus on potential nominees for the U.S. attorney positions in Madison and Milwaukee.

“To the credit of that office, from the Court’s perspective, it has continued to represent the citizens of this district well,” the judges said in today’s statement. “The Court awaits the nomination and confirmation of a full-time United States Attorney by the President and United States Senate.”
