Franklin, WI – The National President of Forward Latino, a national non-profit, non-partisan, service and advocacy organization headquartered in Franklin, Wisconsin and with affiliates and members in 29 states issued the following statement regarding the United States attack on Venezuela and the abduction of its leader Nicolás Maduro.

Statement by National President Darryl Morin:

“This morning, just days before the anniversary of the January 6th attack on our democracy at the U.S. Capitol, Americans awoke to deeply troubling news: an unprovoked military strike against a sovereign nation and the abduction of its leader. This action was carried out without evidence being presented to the American people justifying its necessity, and without the consent of the people’s elected representatives in the United States Congress.

While Forward Latino stands in unwavering solidarity with the oppressed people of Venezuela and their legitimate aspirations for freedom, dignity, and self-determination, and believes strongly in the need for the U.S. promote and support democracy around the globe, we strongly oppose the unilateral action being taken by this administration. Last night’s action lacks clear legal authority under U.S. law and undermines the very international norms and legal frameworks that the United States has long championed.

History has shown that engaging in regime-change efforts without full transparency, democratic consent, or international legitimacy leads to devastating and lasting consequences and sets a dangerous precedent which will certainly be followed by bad actors around the globe.

This administration has taken the U.S. into a perilous situation without first making its case to the American people for its necessity.

As we have learned from similar attempts throughout our history, we must now brace ourselves for the human cost of this decision. We respectfully ask all people of faith to pray for the people of Venezuela, as well as the brave men and women of the U.S. Military, who will be tasked with executing the orders they are given.”
