[Waukesha, WI] – Judge Maria Lazar, candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, today released a comprehensive position paper focused on the protection of religious freedom.
The release marks the third in a series of policy-focused announcements from the Lazar campaign. In the new paper, Judge Lazar emphasizes that the First Amendment’s protection of religious liberty is not merely a suggestion, but a fundamental pillar of a free society that must be defended from government overreach.
“Religious freedom is our ‘First Freedom’ for a reason,” said Judge Maria Lazar. “The right of every Wisconsinite to live, work, and worship according to their deeply held beliefs, without fear of government coercion, is central to the American experiment. As a judge, my role is to ensure that the government respects the constitutional boundaries that protect the conscience of every citizen.”
In the position paper, titled “Protecting Our First Freedom,” Judge Lazar outlines her commitment to:
● Defending the Free Exercise Clause: Ensuring that individuals and organizations are not penalized by the state for practicing their faith in the public square.
● Preventing Government Overreach: Maintaining the “wall of separation” as a protection for religious expression against state interference, rather than a weapon to exclude faith from the community.
● Constitutional Originalism: Applying the text of the Wisconsin and U.S. Constitutions as they were written, ensuring that religious protections remain robust and consistent.
“We have seen increasing attempts by the state to infringe upon the rights of religious schools, charities, and private citizens,” Lazar continued. “The courts must serve as a bulwark against any attempt to treat religious believers as second-class citizens. My judicial philosophy is simple: the law must be a level playing field where the rights of all, including those of faith, are protected equally.”
