La Crosse, WI — Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and La Crosse Mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey have officially proclaimed April 30, 2026, as Civil Discourse Day in Wisconsin and the City of La Crosse.
The date holds historical significance as the anniversary of George Washington’s First Inauguration. In his leadership, George Washington emphasized the importance of civility in public dialogue and the responsibility of leaders to place the well-being of the nation above partisan interests.
While the designation of Civil Discourse Day is symbolic, its purpose is deeply meaningful and urgently relevant. Civil discourse is a cornerstone of our democratic republic. Our system of governance was never intended to produce uniform agreement, but rather to foster principled disagreement—expressed with respect, dignity, and a shared commitment to the common good.
As stated by Governor Evers, “civil discourse is the practice of engaging in respectful and thoughtful dialogue across differences of opinion, and it is a cornerstone of democratic governance and civic life.”
Mayor Washington-Spivey adds, “The health and strength of our communities depend upon the ability of residents, leaders and institutions to listen openly, engage honestly and disagree with dignity.”
We believe that elected officials—and those aspiring to public office—have a responsibility to model civil discourse in both words and actions. In doing so, they strengthen public trust and reinforce the integrity of our democratic institutions.
At a time when political polarization continues to intensify, the need for civil discourse has never been greater. The erosion of respectful dialogue is contributing to a broader breakdown of trust—both in our institutions and among one another as Americans.
Lee Rasch adds, “Civil Discourse Day reinforces public awareness and serves as a call to action. We encourage communities across Wisconsin and throughout the nation to recognize the urgency of this issue and to promote civil discourse as an essential foundation for moving forward together.”
The students of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse are hosting an event on April 30 in recognition of Civil Discourse Day. The keynote speaker is Jeff Thompson, former CEO of Gundersen Health System. Attendees will also hear from state and city leaders, as well as students. The details of the event are attached.
