Registration for Classroom Kickstart, part of Madison Reading Project’s annual Books for Educators literacy program supporting Dane and Sauk County educators with free, diverse books to build classroom libraries, launches officially on Tuesday, August 11. This is the first time Sauk County educators can take advantage of this opportunity, as the nonprofit organization expands its footprint this spring.
Classroom Kickstart welcomes more than 700 teachers to “shop” at MRP’s Book Center between Aug. 18-21 and select up to 25 brand-new, diverse books for their classroom libraries. Last year, more than 22,600 books went to local classrooms, just in time for the start of the fall semester. Additionally, the nonprofit will be hosting a version of this program at two new teacher training sites during the same week, to make sure that new educators can start off their year and classroom with books that reflect their students and classes they are teaching.

“As we bring our many literacy support programs to our bi-county area schools, we recognize firsthand the incredible dedication of educators and how hard they work to support their students,” says Deirdre Steinmetz, Madison Reading Project Co-Executive Director of program & operations. “We know that they want their students to feel seen and validated, and this program of diverse books is our way of supporting that work.”

‘Clear the Book List,’ a campaign begun last year, allows ten educators to be nominated to showcase the amazing work they do to engage students. Community members may show their appreciation by purchasing any of the 25 books per educator on the book list, found on this link:
Madison Reading Project’s mission since forming as a nonprofit in 2014 is to connect communities with free books and literacy resources to ignite a love for reading, which reflects and affirms the diversity of young readers.
