The Milwaukee Common Council has voted unanimously to pass a motion giving MPD officers a duty to intervene if they witness clear ICE misconduct!
“Milwaukee residents stand up and stand out for our neighbors.” said Autumn Pickett, Co-Chair of Milwaukee DSA. “Our solidarity is the backbone of the city and cannot be broken by the fascists in the Trump administration!”
This was the most important piece of the ICE OUT legislative packet introduced earlier this year as well as the most difficult to win support for. Despite this it still passed unanimously due to the large pressure campaign from Milwaukee’s strong working class community and the support of Milwaukee DSA. This is a landmark decision, and the fact it was passed shortly after the release of Salah Sarsour, who was unlawfully detained by ICE, proves that the tides are shifting in the favor of the people and any support for what this current administration is doing has become untenable.
Co-Chair of Milwaukee DSA, Andy Barbour, also spoke passionately about the motion saying: “When activists take to the streets and use their voices to demand an end to ICE’s unconscionable kidnappings and persecutions, the police so often stand against us, allowing federal agents to brutalize protestors and sometimes even joining in themselves. We must do everything we can to bring an end to the injustice against our community and this legislation is a meaningful step toward that.”
Milwaukee DSA organizers remain firm in our opposition to ICE operations and the violence they bring to communities. ICE must no longer be allowed to operate in Milwaukee or in any other city in the US. It’s important now more than ever that we use our voices to demand an end to the cruelty and call for the full abolition of ICE.
