(MILWAUKEE) — Milwaukee Public Schools will close its Summer Academy, Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) and indoor Milwaukee Recreation sites Tuesday, July 14 and Wednesday, July 15 due to heat, Superintendent Brenda Cassellius announced in consultation with Milwaukee Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Totoraitis.

“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community,” Dr. Cassellius said. The district expects to resume normal operations on Thursday, July 16, pending updated weather conditions.

Please see the critical details below regarding outdoor recreation, and meal distributions.

  • Summer Academy & Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO): All sites are completely closed. No classes or indoor activities will take place.
  • Milwaukee Recreation (MKE REC): All indoor MKE REC school sites are closed. However, to help families stay cool, all playground sites that include splash pads and wading pools will remain open. Children should always be supervised by an adult at splash sites and swimming pools.

Summer Meals

We are committed to ensuring MPS students have access to meals during this closure.

Meals will be available at 13 Milwaukee Recreation meal sites located around the city. Individuals who receive meals must remain on site to eat. Specific locations and serving times are available on the MKE REC website.

Decisions that disrupt our daily routines are never taken lightly, but the severity of this heatwave requires us to take proactive measures to protect everyone under our care, the superintendent added. She also encouraged all MPS families and staff to review the Milwaukee Health Department’s tips for staying safe in hot weather.

“Please look out for one another, check on vulnerable neighbors, stay hydrated, and utilize the city’s open splash pads and wading pools to stay cool,” she said.
