Cumberland, Wis. — The Northwoods Policy Network today announced the publication of a new opinion essay in National Review by Executive Director Paul Schecklman and contributor Paul Wassgren examining how states can position themselves for success amid rapid technological and economic change.
Titled “States Must Reboot for the Future,” the article argues that AI, advanced manufacturing, demographic shifts, and global competition are reshaping the American economy. To remain competitive, states must pursue policies that encourage innovation, attract investment, strengthen workforces, and modernize government for the challenges of the twenty-first century.
Schecklman and Wassgren argue that Wisconsin, and the broader industrial Midwest, possess advantages including a strong manufacturing base, skilled labor, and a tradition of innovation. Realizing that potential, however, requires thoughtful reforms to improve competitiveness while preparing communities for industries of tomorrow.
“The next generation of prosperity will belong to states that are willing to compete and lead,” said Paul Schecklman. “Wisconsin is uniquely positioned to capitalize on this opportunity, and northern Wisconsin in particular should play a major raole in ensuring America’s long-term prosperity, security, and national power.”
