LA CROSSE, Wis. – Opportunity Wisconsin, in partnership with Bikes Limited, will host a free community bike tune-up event on Monday, May 11 in La Crosse for UW-La Crosse students, faculty and staff. Trained mechanics will provide basic tune-up services, including tire inflation, brake adjustments, and general assessments, at no cost to attendees. For more complex repairs, community members can receive guidance and rough estimates for future work.

The event comes as gas prices continue to strain household budgets across Wisconsin and the country. As of today, the average gallon of gas in Wisconsin costs more than $4.39 per gallonNew data from the New York Federal Reserve released this week found that lower-income households are bearing the brunt of the energy price spike, cutting their gas consumption rather than absorbing the added cost. To make matters worse, Congress slashed support for renewable energy infrastructure projects last year by passing the Republican Tax Law, with the support of Congressman Derrick Van Orden.

For students, faculty, and staff looking for affordable ways to get around, biking is a practical alternative, but only if their bikes are road-ready. Monday’s event gives the community a free resource to make that possible.
