A group supporting David Crowley has launched its first negative ad against Dem gubernatorial frontrunner Francesca Hong, charging her “record is a distraction we can’t afford.”

Since Crowley got back into the governor’s race July 18, Wisconsin Future Rising has reserved $1.9 million in ads, according to AdImpact. The service has also tracked $757,000 from Crowley’s campaign over that span, while the pro-Crowley Believe in Wisconsin has reported $949,000 in independent expenditures backing his bid for governor.

That’s nearly $3.6 million combined on the airwaves over a little more than a three-week period.

Wisconsin Future Rising said the new ad is running on TV in the Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay and La Crosse markets and on streaming statewide.

According to AdImpact, the new Wisconsin Future Rising ad is the first negative spot any Dem groups or candidates have run in the race for the party’s gubernatorial nomination.

The narrator in the ad knocks Hong for “bizarre rants about holidays we love,” along with calls to defund the police and “voting against protecting kids from sexual predators.”

The narrator closes the spot, “We can’t trust Francesca Hong to defend the progress we’ve built in Wisconsin. Tell Francesca Hong, your record hurts us.”
