Washington, D.C. – Donald Trump has said the quiet part out loud: he believes funding wars should come before protecting Americans’ health care. In his own words, “It’s not possible for us to take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare, all these individual things. […] We have to take care of one thing: military protection. But all these little scams that have taken place, you have to let states take care of them.”

For decades, Medicaid and Medicare have been lifelines for seniors, working families, and people with disabilities. Millions of Americans rely on them to see a doctor, afford prescriptions, and access life-saving care. Yet Trump is treating those needs as expendable, making clear that, in his administration, military spending comes before human lives. At a time when nearly 66 percent of Americans oppose the war and 83 percent support Medicaid, Donald Trump is choosing the polar opposite of what the country wants.

“Donald Trump just exposed the truth, saying Americans’ health care should be sacrificed to pay for wars,” said Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach. “It’s as callous as it is politically toxic, and it lays bare exactly who he’s willing to hurt. He’s telling seniors to brace for higher costs, telling working families to go without care, and telling people with disabilities their coverage is negotiable, all so he can funnel more money into unnecessary wars.

“This isn’t just out of touch — it’s betrayal. Americans don’t want to trade their health care for more wars. They don’t want higher costs, less coverage, and shuttered hospitals so Republicans can bankroll military escalations. Americans’ health care isn’t safe in Trump’s hands, and voters will remember this when they go to the ballot box. Trump is showing exactly whose side he’s on, and it isn’t the American people.”
