Washington, DC — Republicans in Congress are pushing a bill that “expresses support for the tax bill they passed last year.” Those tax cuts overwhelmingly benefit billionaires and big corporations at the expense of working Americans, cutting over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. Their attempt to pat themselves on the back comes on the heels of recent Navigator polling confirming that the big, ugly bill remains wildly unpopular. In response, Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse issued the following statement:
“What a cruel joke. Republicans are patting themselves on the back for passing a bill that spiked premiums for American families, ripped health care from 15 million people, and is closing rural hospitals across the country, all to fund tax breaks for billionaires. The only people celebrating this bill are billionaire donors and corporate CEOs. Everyone else hates it. It polls terribly. It’s a political loser. Since the GOP tax bill passed, it has cost them elections all over the country. Even with a long list of contenders, celebrating its passage might be the dumbest political move of the year.”
What the Data Shows On Trump and Republicans’ Billionaire- and Corporate-Enriching Agenda
- By A 20-Point Margin, More Voters Believe The Big, Ugly Bill Does Not Benefit Middle-Class Families (48% to 28%).
- Despite the Unrelenting Gaslighting, Voters Know That Trump And Republicans’ Tax Cuts Aren’t Helping Them. Navigator polling shows just 18% of Americans expect to pay less in taxes this year, while a majority expects to pay the same or more than in previous years. The GOP’s tax scam is “especially unpopular among self-identified service industry workers,” with a majority (52%) viewing it unfavorably.
The GOP tax scam:
- Doubled and tripled premiums for millions of hardworking Americans, including small business owners, farmers, and older adults;
- Puts health care out of reach entirely for an estimated 15 million Americans, including over four million who rely on the ACA;
- Forces middle-class families to shoulder hundreds of billions in higher health care costs, hiking taxes for those who rely on ACA tax credits by an average of $4,000 in 2027;
- Funneled millions of families into reduced coverage that will force them to pay thousands more each year in health care costs; and
- Pressured countless families to cut back on food, clothing, and other basics to afford health insurance and greater out-of-pocket costs.
