(MADISON, Wis.) Today Rep. Margaret Arney (Milwaukee/Wauwatosa) celebrated the Assembly Democrats victory in the fight for women’s health and family care as the Wisconsin Assembly finally voted on and passed Gail’s Law (insurance coverage for supplemental, diagnostic breast cancer screenings) and expanded postpartum Medicaid coverage. Rep. Arney released the following statement:
After years of persistent pressure and broad bipartisan support, these life-saving measures are now headed to Governor Evers desk to be signed into law.
For years, both bills have been stalled in committee and blocked from consideration on the Assembly floor. Despite broad support and the fact that these measures will save lives, it has been an uphill battle to get them to a vote.
Assembly Democrats have long said that we are working on behalf of Wisconsin families, and we are now beginning to see the effects of that effort. Months of relentless work and advocacy have helped get these bills across the finish line. This is a momentous occasion for women and new moms in Wisconsin. Despite the roadblocks, we have now passed concrete victories for women’s health.
Today I’m thinking of my mother Maria Tully, and friend Renée Scherck-Meyer, who both died of breast cancer. As a result of the vote today, more women will have access to potentially life-saving health care. This is what good governing looks like. I look forward to doing more to help Wisconsinites live healthier lives.
