MADISON — State Representative Margaret Arney released the following statement regarding the recent detention of Salah Sarsour, the president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee (ISM) by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE):
The arrest and detention of Salah Sarsour by ICE is deeply unsettling. This is not an issue of immigration, but rather instilling fear in the citizens of Wisconsin. I stand with the ISM and Congresswoman Gwen Moore in condemning this action against a respected community leader.
Salah Sarsour has lived in our state for decades and is a pillar of the Milwaukee community, yet was taken into custody in a manner that raises serious concerns about due process and transparency. These circumstances demand clear answers from federal authorities.
Every individual in this country, regardless of background, deserves fair treatment under the law and access to due process. Wisconsin is stronger when all residents feel safe, respected, and protected by the law. I join local leaders and community members in calling for transparency, accountability, and a full review of this case.
My office will continue to monitor this situation closely and advocate for the fair and just treatment of all Wisconsin residents.
