MADISON — Assembly Majority Leader Tyler August (R-Walworth) released the following statement in response to Governor Tony Evers’ State of the State address:
“Last night the Governor called for property tax relief, stronger support for special education, help for working families, disaster assistance, and responsible use of Wisconsin’s surplus. He also urged Republicans to work together, reach agreement, and bring him a deal.
“I have good news for the Governor, Legislative Republicans presented a comprehensive proposal to the Governor that reflects many of exact priorities he claims to want. Our plan provides $500 million in property tax relief through the school levy tax credit, increases special education funding by $200 million over the biennium, creates an educator expense deduction, funds disaster assistance for families and businesses, strengthens FoodShare accountability, and delivers $500 rebates per filer ($1,000 for married couples).
“The Governor said that he wants to do more for Wisconsin families and invest in our schools while providing relief. That’s what this proposal does, and at minimum it’s a starting point for negotiation.
“He asked for a deal. We brought him one. Now it’s time to move from speeches to solutions and sit down with us to reach a deal that’s good for the taxpayers of Wisconsin.”
