BARABOO, Wis – Representative Karen DeSanto hosted a community discourse in Baraboo to discuss education funding and property tax reform on Wednesday, May 6th. This event occurred in the wake of three failed referendums to increase school funding in Portage, Baraboo, and Sauk Prairie school districts. She was accompanied by local community members well-versed in education funding, and Representatives Christian Phelps and Angelina Cruz, the lead authors of AB 1176, which proposes property tax relief and increased education funding.

Rep. DeSanto released the following statement in response to this event:

“As a representative, it is my duty to hear your concerns in the community. In listening, it has become clear that the current system of education funding and its impact on property taxes is not sustainable. This current underfunding of our schools coupled with rising costs requires us to come together to find a solution.

“This event was a space for our district to collaboratively work towards that solution. I was glad to moderate this information-dense discussion and have the community ask questions, hear from local experts, and discuss future resolutions through this collective call to action.”
