Madison, WI – Today, Representative Cindi Duchow (R-Delafield) voted in support of Assembly Bill 840. This bill creates numerous requirements for data centers in Wisconsin.
AB 840 includes provisions that protect consumers, promotes water and land conservation, and ensures transparency with the public. Under this bill, large data centers may not pass any utility costs onto consumers. These centers must use a closed-loop cooling system, which is a responsible and sustainable approach to cooling that utilizes recycled water. AB 840 also requires large data centers to report their water usage to the Department of Natural Resources annually.
“Today, I voted for a comprehensive bill that addresses both the environmental and economic impacts associated with data centers. I am confident that the provisions in this bill will put much needed guardrails on these projects and ultimately, protect consumers and promote innovation in our state”.
Assembly Bill 840 and its companion, Senate Bill 843, await consideration by the State Senate before reaching the Governor’s desk for approval or veto.
