MADISON – During this afternoon’s Assembly floor session, State Representative Joan Fitzgerald (D-Fort Atkinson) offered an amendment intended to reduce property tax bills for Wisconsin families. The proposed amendment, ruled not germane by the Republican majority, was in reference to Assembly Bill 457, which would prohibit school districts from adopting a resolution to exceed their revenue limits.
“As a state legislature, we should be doing everything we can to fund schools appropriately so we don’t have to keep going to referendum. This amendment would do that by providing schools with the funding we should have provided in the state budget. Today is the day to provide taxpayers relief from the devastating impact that continual underfunding has had on our public schools.
“Having spent 33 years in public education, I know what this underfunding has cost our students, our teachers, and our taxpayers. Public schools are the heart of our communities. We should not be making it harder for schools to operate. We have the ability through this amendment to ensure that our schools have the resources and funding they need, and our property taxpayers get the relief they deserve,” said Rep. Fitzgerald.
