MADISON – Today, State Representative Joan Fitzgerald (D-Fort Atkinson) introduced LRB-5091, a bill that would crack down on firearm dealers to address ongoing gun trafficking in Wisconsin. The legislation was introduced alongside Representative Deb Andraca (D-Whitefish Bay), Senator LaTonya Johnson (D-Milwaukee), and Senator Melissa Ratcliff (D-Cottage Grove).

“As we continue to see violent crime rise in Wisconsin, it is absolutely crucial that the Legislature take action to help track the flow of illegal guns across the state and the country. This legislation is a step in the right direction to give law enforcement the tools they need to interrupt trafficking and trace illegal gun movement,” said Rep. Fitzgerald.

“Gun violence is tearing through communities across Wisconsin, and illegal gun trafficking is a key reason why our kids and families are at risk,” said Marta Hansen, a volunteer with the Wisconsin chapter of Moms Demand Action. “LRB-5091 takes meaningful steps to stop the flow of illegal guns by focusing on stopping traffickers at the source, holding bad actors accountable, and giving law enforcement the tools they need to intervene in trafficking before lives are lost.”

Rep. Fitzgerald continued, “The majority of gun dealers and gun owners follow the law, and this bill would protect them. This bill would crack down on the few corrupt, bad actors who endanger everyone else, and finally bring Wisconsin law in line with the majority of citizens who value safe communities.

“Gun violence is a preventable issue. It is time to stand up, protect our communities, and stop illegal gun trafficking in Wisconsin.”
