Madison, WI – Representative Chanz Green (R-Grand View) issued the following statement after Governor Evers vetoed “Zoey’s Law” late last Friday:

“I am extremely disappointed that the governor vetoed this bill. I introduced it in late 2025 during his ‘Year of the Kid’ to highlight and address the gaps in the system for reporting child abuse that failed Zoey Chafer. With this veto, he has fallen short of the standard he set for himself during the ‘Year of the Kid’ and the standard that should have been there for Zoey.

In his veto message, the governor said that this bill would make it harder for law enforcement to respond to abuse as it occurs. He may believe that, but every law enforcement association our office consulted supported this bill. They welcomed the challenge because they want timely, accurate information to act on immediately.

At the end of the day, Governor Evers failed Zoey with this veto. Thankfully, he will not be here next session. I plan to reintroduce ‘Zoey’s Law,’ and I hope the next governor recognizes the importance of strengthening our system for reporting child abuse and signs this into law. We owe that to Zoey and her family, and to every child in Wisconsin, to ensure that no warning sign of abuse is ever ignored.”
