Madison, WI – State Representative Rick Gundrum (R-Slinger) released the following statement in response to Governor Tony Evers’ State of the State Address:

“Last night, Governor Evers outlined his priorities for Wisconsin, but he also placed responsibility on the Legislature for challenges that have been shaped by his own veto decisions.

“Wisconsin families are dealing with real affordability challenges. Yet time and again, when the Legislature has passed additional tax relief and common-sense reforms, the Governor has chosen to veto them. You cannot block relief and then claim credit for solving the problem.

“Wisconsin has a multi-billion-dollar surplus because taxpayers have done their part and the Legislature has budgeted responsibly. That money does not belong to Madison. It belongs to the hardworking families who earned it.

“Despite our disagreements, there have been bipartisan wins. Last session, we delivered historic investments in special education, strengthened public safety, increased funding for local roads, and provided meaningful tax relief. That proves we can govern responsibly when we focus on results instead of rhetoric.

“Republicans have now put forward a common-sense plan to return surplus dollars directly to taxpayers while continuing to invest in core priorities. If the Governor is serious about affordability and accountability, he should accept that deal and work with the Legislature to deliver relief for Wisconsin families.”
