MADISON, Wis. — Earlier today Governor Tony Evers signed Assembly Bill 601(AB601) which would make changes to state law regarding online sports betting. In response, Representative Kalan Haywood (D-Milwaukee), a co-author of the bill, released the following statement:

“Today marks a thoughtful and measured step forward for the State of Wisconsin. AB601 reflects recognition of the reality we are already living in: sports wagering is happening, often through unregulated, offshore platforms that offer little in the way of consumer protection or accountability. This law begins the process of bringing that activity into the light, where it can be responsibly governed, better understood, and more effectively safeguarded.

“But let me be clear, this is not the finish line. AB601 is the beginning of a careful and deliberate process. As implementation moves forward, including the upcoming compact negotiations, we must remain focused on getting this sensitive matter right.

“We must continue building a framework rooted in responsibility. It means putting strong guardrails in place to prevent abuse. It means acknowledging the financial and mental health challenges that can come with wagering activities, and ensuring that resources, education, and support systems are accessible to those who need them.

“We have an obligation to protect consumers, particularly those most vulnerable, while also ensuring transparency and accountability at every step. Done right, this approach allows us to replace a system that operates in the shadows with one that reflects our values and prioritizes the well-being, and improvement of our communities.

“I also want to express my sincere appreciation for the full support of all 11 Tribal Nations in Wisconsin. Their partnership, leadership, and engagement have been critical to reaching this point, and I look forward to continuing that collaboration as we look to the future on issues that uplift the State of Wisconsin and our Tribal Nations.

“The work ahead will require steady leadership and continued collaboration. If we stay grounded in our responsibility to the people of this state, I am confident we can build a system that is fair, accountable, and reflective of Wisconsin’s values.”
