MADISON, Wis. – Yesterday, a man was shot and killed by a Madison police officer on a city street near the Wisconsin capitol. Representative Kalan Haywood (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement regarding this incident:
“Wisconsin is again enduring another tragedy in which another person of color was killed by law enforcement. My prayers are with his family, his loved ones, and every member of the Madison community grieving this devastating loss.
“As our communities mourn this tragedy, I expect the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s criminal investigation to be transparent, thorough, and to hold anyone accountable if the facts warrant it.
“Every time an incident like this occurs, it fractures the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they are sworn to serve. It deepens mistrust, reopens old wounds, and leaves families and neighborhoods questioning whether justice is truly equal. The public should never be expected to accept the loss of life without demanding answers. Trust begins with transparency, accountability, and the confidence that every human life is valued equally.
“Every Wisconsinite deserves dignity, due process, and equal justice under the law regardless of their economic status, gender, race, religion or ZIP code.”
