MADISON-Today, Representative Jenna Jacobson (D-Oregon) released the following statement after the failure by Legislative Republicans to release funding for planned fish stocking, habitat management, and maintenance of public facilities:
The 2025-27 Biennial budget set aside $4 million for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to fund core work in those areas, but requires the Joint Committee on Finance to release those funds. The DNR’s planned investments will now be cut as a result of an April 12 deadline to plan their work.
“Promises made, promises broken. It is beyond disappointing to see over $4 million that was designated for the betterment of our fishing and hunting opportunities is now going by the wayside. Local anglers and hunters expect quality opportunities to pursue their passion.
“With the fishing season underway, it is upsetting that we will not be providing the local support to help our anglers. Additionally, the maintenance of facilities used by Wisconsinites and visitors will be negatively impacted. This request by the DNR was not unexpected. The funding was already set aside for this very purpose last year.
“After reaching out to the budget committee co-chairs to highlight the need to release this timely funding, I received no response and the committee has continued to sit on their hands. I am again calling for action from the committee to allow the release of these funds to allow the best opportunities for all who enjoy our outdoors.”
