MADISON – Rep. Amanda Nedweski (R–Pleasant Prairie) is urging support for legislation she authored and sponsored that would protect children from irreversible gender transition procedures and allow patients to hold the medical establishment accountable for the lasting harm caused by chemical and surgical interventions.

Her call comes in the wake of stunning reversals by the American Medical Association and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, which have both publicly backed away from support for gender reassignment surgeries for minors following a landmark medical malpractice verdict in New York. In that case, a jury awarded $2 million to a detransitioner who underwent a double mastectomy as a child.

“For years, the gender industrial complex has made billions of dollars by pushing dangerous and medically unnecessary procedures on vulnerable children,” Nedweski said. “Now that doctors, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies are finally facing legal consequences, they’re suddenly changing their tune. The science didn’t change—only their profit motives did. Our kids are not science experiments, nor should they be collateral damage for a multi-billion-dollar industry.”

The financial incentives behind these procedures are substantial. Recent estimates place the lifetime cost of medical transition between $87,000 and $410,000 for biological males, with costs for biological females potentially exceeding $600,000. In 2022 alone, the global sex reassignment surgery market was valued at $4.12 billion, while the U.S. hormone therapy market reached roughly $2 billion in 2024.

“I first ran for office in 2022 as a concerned mom committed to protecting children and securing a better future for them, and that mission hasn’t changed,” Nedweski said. “That’s why I authored legislation this session to create a civil cause of action for minors harmed by gender transition procedures—so families can finally hold the medical establishment accountable.”

“But accountability after the fact isn’t enough,” she continued. “We also need to make sure this harm is never inflicted in the first place. As a proud co-sponsor of the Help Not Harm Act in both of my terms in the Legislature, I believe Wisconsin must act decisively to prohibit irreversible gender transition procedures on minors.”

Nedweski urged lawmakers to advance AB 400, which establishes civil liability for harm caused to minors, along with the Help Not Harm Act, AB 104.

“These bills put children ahead of profits,” Nedweski said. “The Legislature must pass them and send them to the Governor’s desk—because protecting kids should never be controversial.”
