Madison- Representative Jim Piwowarczyk (R–Town of Erin) released the following statement after the Wisconsin State Assembly passed Assembly Bill 281 today. The bill requires the State of Wisconsin and contractors with state contracts totaling $50,000 or more to use the federal E-Verify system to confirm employment eligibility.

E-Verify, administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the Social Security Administration, verifies work authorization by checking I-9 information against federal databases.

“Today’s passage of AB 281 is a commonsense step to protect legal workers and ensure taxpayer dollars are not used in violation of federal law,” said Rep. Piwowarczyk. “It promotes transparency, accountability, and fair competition in state employment and contracting.”

The legislation aligns Wisconsin with other states that already use E-Verify and helps prevent identity theft, fraud, and unlawful employment practices within the state government.

“In the near future, I look forward to expanding the E-Verify requirements to all Wisconsin employers, like 10 other states have already done.”
