Madison — This afternoon, on a bipartisan vote of 31-2, the State Senate passed Assembly Bill 759 (AB759).  Rep. Amaad Rivera-Wagner (D-Green Bay), a co author of the bill, applauded the final passage of the legislation, which  supports individuals enrolled in DACA in obtaining professional licenses in Wisconsin. The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk for signature.

“This is government at its best, where it addresses our challenges and inspires the work we still have ahead of us,” said Rep. Rivera-Wagner. “At a time when it feels like our national government is working to create division, this bill shows that here in Wisconsin, we still believe in respecting our neighbors and working together to solve real problems.”

“In Green Bay, we take care of each other and we reward hard work,” Rivera-Wagner continued. “Supporting families to work alongside their community in these much needed professions is what makes me so proud to represent this community.”

The legislation ensures that individuals who met the strict qualifications to enroll in the DACA program can obtain professional licenses if they meet the same requirements as anyone else, helping address workforce needs across Wisconsin.

DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, applies to individuals who came to the United States as children and have grown up in communities like ours, attending our schools, working in our local economy, and contributing to the places they call home.

This is what it looks like when we focus on practical solutions over politics, strengthening our workforce and supporting communities across Wisconsin.

“We know how hard it is to outwork a broken system,” Rivera-Wagner added. “This bill creates real opportunity and is how we start fixing a system that has held too many people back for far too long.”

The bill now awaits the Governor’s signature.
