GREEN BAY, WI — State Representative Amaad Rivera Wagner released the following statement after Brown County advanced the next phase of relocating the coal piles from downtown Green Bay, marking a historic milestone for the community:
“Today is a moment of real pride for Green Bay. A once in a generation project that people have fought for, believed in, and refused to let go is finally moving forward. This is what it looks like when a community asks its government to rise to the moment and government answers.”
Representative Rivera Wagner emphasized that the progress reflects years of sustained community advocacy and partnership across levels of government. “This did not happen because of one decision or one leader. It happened because residents spoke up, local leaders stayed committed, and institutions chose to work together toward something better. That kind of progress changes what is possible for the next generation.”
The Representative praised the leadership of the City of Green Bay and Eric Genrich, as well as Brown County officials, for helping move the project forward. “I am grateful to the Mayor and city leadership for never giving up on this vision, and I want to sincerely thank C. Reiss Coal Co. for working with the community and public partners to make this progress possible. Relocating a legacy operation of this scale is not easy, and their willingness to engage has helped move Green Bay toward a better future.”
Representative Rivera Wagner also highlighted the critical role of Tony Evers in making this progress possible. “None of this would be happening without Governor Evers. His commitment to moving the coal piles shows that government can be a force for good and can materially improve people’s lives when it chooses to lead.”
For more than a century, the coal piles have shaped Green Bay’s waterfront. With this step forward, the community moves closer to a future defined by opportunity, access, and long term prosperity. “This is how meaningful change happens. Steady work. Shared purpose. And a belief that our community deserves better.”
