Madison, Wis. — The Wisconsin State Assembly met in special session on Wednesday to vote on Governor Evers’ and Republican majority leaders’ surplus spending bill.
Rep. Ann Roe (D-Janesville) issued the following statement:
“A surplus only exists if someone or an organization has paid all of its bills. Wisconsin has not paid all of its bills and we know there are some uncertainties around Federal funding. Therefore, given my 30-year career in business and nonprofit management, I am extremely worried about placing Wisconsin in a challenging budget deficit that we will struggle to manage, according to the detailed analysis of this bill by the Wisconsin Fiscal Bureau.
This bill includes some one-time funding for special education, limited property tax relief, and an uneven distribution of tax rebate monies.
In its current form, this bill is a reckless spending plan that will not provide the much-needed relief all Wisconsinites need and deserve. Our communities and schools are desperate for real, sustainable, and reliable help with funding and operations, which have suffered for over a decade under Republican leadership.
Democrats in the Assembly offered a comprehensive and affordable bill that would support our public schools beyond just one session and, at the same time, offer real property tax relief for property owners. This bill, also analyzed by fiscal experts, would cost less and do more. I will keep supporting fiscally sound, sustainable funding that does not jeopardize Wisconsin’s economy or its people.”
