Madison, WI — State Representative David Steffen (R-Howard) is seeking funding for a first
responder treatment center. The “Hometown Hero Center” will fill a void in Wisconsin by
providing specialized treatment specifically for first responders.
“First responders answer the call to protect our communities every day. That service comes at a
cost and takes a particular toll on mental health. At the same time, the unique experiences and
circumstances that impact first responders make specialized care critically important. This center
will help ensure that our heroes receive the care they need,” said Rep. Steffen.
Rep. Steffen will be seeking $6 million in state funding via the biennial budget process to
acquire, renovate and maintain a facility in Wisconsin. The funding will function as a forgivable
loan with various stipulations to safeguard taxpayer dollars and ensure the long-term
sustainability of the project. The center will be dedicated to serving Wisconsin’s first responders
in need of mental health and addiction treatment.
The project has already gained the support of various stakeholders including Green Bay Packers
Quarterback Jordan Love. Love’s father was a police officer who tragically died by suicide.
Oconto County Sheriff Todd Skarban has led efforts to advance this project and bring attention
to this statewide need.
“Wisconsin’s first responders put their lives on the line and make sacrifices every day in order to
keep our communities safe. It’s critical that in their time of need our state has their back,” said
Sheriff Skarban.
The funding proposal will be submitted as part of the state biennial budget process, which will
begin in early 2027.
