MADISON, WI – Yesterday, a road construction worker was struck and killed by a vehicle near Pflaum and Alder Roads in Madison, in close proximity to Sennett Middle School and La Follette High School. As a result of the incident, both schools were placed in a secure status and went through a modified dismissal process. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:
“I am deeply concerned and saddened to learn that a road construction worker was struck and killed by a vehicle in my district yesterday, in close proximity to Sennett Middle School and La Follette High School. My thoughts, my heart, and my prayers are with the family, friends, and loved ones of this individual in their time of profound grief. My thoughts are also with the students, staff, and community members who may have witnessed or been otherwise impacted by this upsetting event; I hope they receive the services and support they need.
No one should lose or fear for their life while simply doing their job. Every person who works to construct, repair, and maintain our roads deserves to make it home safely at the end of their shift. This fatal crash was preventable, and we must do better.
To all drivers who travel our roads, particularly in construction and school zones: please slow down. Please pay close attention to what’s happening around you, especially when pedestrians are present. It is our job as motorists to drive an appropriate speed, be aware of our surroundings, and follow the rules of the road.
As the legislator for the district where this tragic incident took place, I will continue to monitor developments and create policy that ensures our streets are safe for everyone.”
