MILWAUKEE, Wis. – State Representative Sequanna Taylor (D-District 11) is calling for immediate action following the closure of multiple grocery stores in Milwaukee, warning that the loss of these stores puts families, seniors, and entire neighborhoods at risk.

“These closures are not just inconvenient. They are dangerous,” said Rep. Taylor. “When grocery stores shut their doors, communities lose access to fresh food, jobs, and stability. No family should have to travel miles just to buy basic groceries.”

Many Milwaukee neighborhoods affected by these closures already face limited transportation options and fewer healthy food choices. The sudden loss of nearby grocery stores forces residents to rely on distant retailers or higher-cost convenience options, worsening health disparities and financial strain.

“This is a public health issue and an equity issue,” Rep. Taylor said. “We know that lack of access to nutritious food leads to higher rates of chronic illness and increased costs for families and the health care system. Ignoring this problem will only deepen existing disparities.”

Rep. Taylor is urging state and local leaders, economic development agencies, and community partners to work together immediately on short-term solutions, including access to alternative food options, while developing long-term strategies to attract and sustain full-service grocery stores in underserved areas.

“Milwaukee residents deserve more than words after the fact,” Rep. Taylor said. “We need coordinated action now to ensure every neighborhood has reliable access to affordable, healthy food.”
