MADISON, WI. — Recently, President Trump spent over $10 million in DHS funds to air TV advertisements ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, including recycled campaign ads. He has also spent over $500 million to send “Obamacare rebate checks” to residents in thirty states. Of these funds, $339 million will be sent to states with eight of the nine most competitive Senate races and ten of the twelve most competitive governor’s races, according to nonpartisan analysts.

Representative Udell (D – 47th District) released the following statement:

“The president is spending millions in taxpayer funds in a blatant attempt to buy support ahead of the midterms. Once again, this spending clearly breaks the law under the Anti-Deficiency Act, the Purpose Statute, and a new law Trump himself signed this year which bars Congressionally-appropriated funds from being used for ‘publicity or propaganda purposes.’

“As lawmakers, our focus should be on strengthening our campaign finance regulations and restricting large-money donors, corporate interests, and foreign interference in our elections. Instead, our president is injecting even more money into the campaign cycle, and he’s using your taxpayer dollars to do it.”
