MADISON, Wis. — This week, the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate convened for a special session to discuss Governor Evers’ proposal to ban gerrymandering in Wisconsin. However, almost none of the Republican caucus appeared for this session.

Representative Udell (D-47th District) released the following statement:

“Fair maps and competitive elections are essential to healthy Democracy. This should be a bipartisan priority. Wisconsin has experienced how damaging a gerrymander can be, and it is imperative that we prevent it from happening again in the future.

“My Democratic colleagues and I came prepared to vote on the Governor’s proposal, but once again Republican legislators failed to show up for work. This is consistent with the partisan obstruction they’ve played all session, refusing to schedule votes or hearings on our proposals like the First Time Homebuyer Act, Less for Rx, and Healthy School Meals for All.

“The people of Wisconsin want lower costs and increased transparency. Not only does the Republican majority refuse to make these changes; they refuse to discuss them.”
