MADISON, WI. — In 2025, federal Republicans passed their Big Ugly Bill, which made sweeping federal cuts and policy changes to programs like Medicaid and Foodshare. Many of these changes will be implemented this coming fall.
Representative Randy Udell (D-47th District) released the following statement:
“This fall, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services estimates a new $142-million cost in Wisconsin taxpayer dollars per year to implement the BadgerCare and FoodShare mandates under the Big Ugly Bill. However, these mandates will not improve the results of these programs. Instead, an estimated 63,000 BadgerCare members will face immediate risk of losing their healthcare coverage. That number is expected to grow to 270,000 over the next decade.
“The Big Ugly Bill also significantly reduced federal aid to our FoodShare program. Beginning October 1st, Wisconsin will be required to pay 75% of the cost of running FoodShare, an increase from the prior 50% split between federal and state funding. The Trump Administration has shown it would rather spend our nation’s wealth to wage war against Iran, which has accomplished nothing besides further increasing costs.
