MADISON, Wis. — For the first time in nineteen years, the Wisconsin Legislature held floor sessions this week without a livestream or recording of the procedures.
Representative Randy Udell (D-47th District) released the following statement:
“Governmental transparency is vital to Democracy, now more than ever. For nineteen years, every floor session and most committee meetings have been livestreamed and archived by WisconsinEye so that the public can watch their legislators and hold us accountable.
“Today, Legislative Republicans voted down our proposals to provide property tax relief by expanding the homestead tax credit and by funding schools through general revenue, and to support our workforce by raising our current $2.33 per hour tipped minimum wage. Rather than allowing the public to view these debates, the Republican majority failed to maintain WisconsinEye coverage, failed to provide a public alternative, and enforced a ban on staff from recording manually.
“The Wisconsin people deserve transparency and accountability. We deserve better.”
