(MADISON)—Today, Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court of the United States’ decision in Barbara v. Donald J. Trump, the case before the court that contemplates our nation’s centuries long, constitutional requirement that people born in our country are citizens:

“Trump attacked the Constitution, and lost. The President’s argument in Barbara v. Trump asked the Court to ignore the plain language of the 14th Amendment, but the Court rejected him.

“The 14th Amendment has been law for over 150 years, and every court has upheld the obvious interpretation of its very first sentence—that children born in the United States are citizens.

“President Trump and his administration must end their attempts to undermine our Constitution. This case never should have come before the court. The American people are not stupid. We know plain language when we see it.

“The President’s attacks against our immigrant neighbors are making the Trump affordability crisis even worse. America is the Land of Opportunity, a place where families come to work hard and create a better life for their children. That fundamental value is one of our nation’s greatest strengths and is the reason many Americans call our great nation home.

“America desperately needs bipartisan immigration reform, like the bill in Congress that Donald Trump sabotaged during his most recent campaign for reelection. Instead, the President has focused on tearing American families apart and violating the constitutional rights of the American people. He has made our country weaker, not stronger.”
