MADISON – Today, during the State of Black Wisconsin, Ranking Joint Finance Committee Member Senator LaTonya Johnson introduced the Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus policy agenda for future legislative sessions. This follows last year’s Statewide Listening Tour to build a Black Policy Agenda with stops in Green Bay, Racine, Madison, Milwaukee, and Beloit, along with engagements in members’ districts and community partners.

“This agenda reflects both the unique challenges facing Black Wisconsinites and the shared priorities we have with all communities across the state. As elected leaders, it is our responsibility to enact policy to solve issues affecting everyone’s lives, especially when the data shows issues affect communities disproportionately more than others.” Senator LaTonya Johnson, the Ranking Joint Finance Committee Member, said.

The Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus’ Policy Agenda includes priorities that cover seven subject areas, including:

  1. Affordable Housing and Protecting Renters
  2. Education and Literacy
  3. Economic Opportunity
  4. Healthcare and Mental Health
  5. Criminal Justice Reform
  6. Democracy and Civic Engagement
  7. Environmental and Infrastructure Needs

“Our caucus policy priorities reflect the needs of the entire state, not just Black Wisconsinites. Yes, many of these issues affect our communities disproportionately, but that doesn’t make our desire for change any different. We are not asking for preferential treatment; we are demanding that we solve these issues that affect everyone.” Senator Dora Drake, Chair of the Legislative Caucus, said.
