MADISON – Today, State Senator Kelda Roys sent letter to the Wisconsin Congressional Delegation calling for an independent third-party investigation into the tragic murder of Renee Nicole Good in Minnesota and for a suspension of ICE raids until our communities can be assured they are properly trained to obey our laws and respect constitutional rights.
In the letter, Sen. Roys said, “An innocent person’s life was taken by a violent, untrained federal agent, even though she posed no threat to him and was exercising her constitutional rights as an American. The ICE agent who shot her as she tried to leave is part of an agency that is acting with impunity, emboldened daily by the very elected leaders who took an oath to uphold our constitution, including the rights of due process.”
Following the death of Renee Good in Minneapolis by an ICE agent Wednesday, State Sen. Kelda Roys (D-Madison) issued the following statement:
“The Trump regime has empowered a violent, untrained, unaccountable paramilitary force – and deployed them against American communities including Minneapolis. Over the past decade, whether it be in Madison, Baltimore, or Chicago, we have seen increased public safety, as those cities have implemented evidence-based measures to ensure we have the freedom to be treated with the dignity every American deserves. Now, after years of progress, the Trump regime has created a group of armed vigilantes who are assaulting our freedoms, today murdering a widowed mother as she attempted to get out of their way. The administration’s agents should be investigated, charged, and held fully accountable. In this country, no person can be above the law, especially not a public official who abuses their power.
“This is unacceptable. As people from Palmyra and the Oneida Nation have this year, we must reject this iteration of ICE – they are acting illegally and unconstitutionally, attacking and abducting people without cause or justification, and sowing terror to silence dissent and increase the power of the Trump regime. They are making each and every one of us less safe and less free.”
