MADISON, Wis. – Sen. Patrick Testin (R-Stevens Point) joined his Joint Finance Committee colleagues today in voting in favor of a $1.8 billion bipartisan bill aimed at providing significant tax relief to the residents of Wisconsin.

“For months, we have been negotiating with Gov. Tony Evers on what to do with our state’s budget surplus,” Sen. Testin said. “It has always been the priority of Legislative Republicans to return that money to taxpayers and make strategic investments in areas that help lower property taxes. While no side gets exactly what they want in a compromise, this is the best deal we could put together with a Democrat governor. With so many families across our state struggling financially right now, we want to make sure they get this tax relief sooner rather than later.”

The legislative package approved by the Joint Finance Committee includes the following:

  • $850 million for income tax rebate checks for Wisconsinites, with married joint filers receiving $600 and individuals getting $300
  • $600 million in special education reimbursements and general school aid meant to lower property taxes
  • The elimination of the state income tax on cash tips and overtime income

The bill is scheduled to be considered by the full Senate and Assembly on Wednesday, May 13.
