Madison – Last Month, the Sisters Network of Southeast Wisconsin held their 3rd Annual Pink Chair Affair Brunch, bringing together breast cancers survivors, caregivers, and community partners for a day of celebration. The Sisters Network of Southeast Wisconsin is a local chapter of the national Sisters Network Inc., which aims to raise breast cancer awareness within the black community, offer a network of support, and improve access to mammograms and other crucial care. Each local chapter of the Sisters Network is run by a survivor.
During the ceremony, the Sisters Network highlighted community members who play critical roles in advancing their mission. Dr. Adrienne Cobb, Surgical Oncologist at Froedtert Hospital and Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin, won the Healthcare Partner Award. Sara Richter, with the American Cancer Society, was honored with the Pink Sponsorship Award. The Community Outreach Partner Award went to Pastor Demetrius and Joye Crum of Second Baptist Church of Kenosha, and their Legislative Partner Award went to State Senator Bob Wirch.
Said Wirch (D-Pleasant Prairie): “I am incredibly honored to be recognized along with these wonderful individuals who have dedicated their lives to improving breast cancer awareness and caring for those fighting breast cancer. Over my time in state government, I have fought hard to make treatment and care for breast cancer more affordable. Most recently, I coauthored a bill that would require health insurance providers to cover diagnostic breast exams and supplemental breast screenings for individuals who are at an increased risk of breast cancer.
“Breast cancer has touched my family directly, making this a deeply personal issue for me. While elected officials can legislate for improving access to affordable healthcare, these individuals are on the front lines, providing direct care with compassion and support. I want to thank the healthcare workers recognized at the Pink Chair Affair Brunch for the invaluable work they do, and all the caregivers around our community who walk alongside those with cancer during the most difficult times in their lives.”
