Today, the Republican-created Special Committee on Oversight of the Department of Justice held an executive session to discuss the committee report and recommendations.
The two Democratic members of the Committee, Senator Jodi Habush Sinykin (D-Whitefish Bay) and Senator Melissa Ratcliff (D-Cottage Grove) released the following statement:
“Wisconsinites deserve transparency and accountability in government. But, unfortunately what we saw from the Special Committee on Oversight of the Department of Justice is not that. Instead, this committee has become a platform for political theatre that duplicates existing oversight and processes and distracts from the real work of improving quality of life across the state.
“The Wisconsin Department of Justice is already subject to rigorous legislative oversight, including budget hearings, Joint Finance Committee review, and regular reporting requirements. Creating an additional committee to rehash these same processes is unnecessary and an inefficient use of taxpayer’s resources.
“If our Republican colleagues were serious about the wellbeing of Wisconsin communities, we would be focused on meaningful solutions to address kitchen table issues to help lower the cost of living and raise the quality of life here in Wisconsin. Instead, this committee was formed to manufacture distrust by prioritizing partisan narratives over productive policymaking.”
