New filings with the Federal Election Commission show Brad Smith has raised $155,000 for his campaign to represent Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District, more than any other candidate challenging Republican incumbent Glenn Grothman.
The filings also show Smith is the only candidate among the race’s top fundraisers who has not received large amounts of support from out-of-state donors and PAC money. Smith’s campaign continues to be powered overwhelmingly by individual donors from within Wisconsin.
According to the filings, the campaign has received support from 803 individual donors. 95 percent of contributions came from individuals in Wisconsin, and 84 percent came directly from within the 6th District. The campaign has not accepted contributions from corporate PACs or from AIPAC.
“Our campaign is being built by the people of this district, not by outside interests trying to buy influence,” Smith said. “Wisconsin isn’t for sale, and I’m proud that the support behind this campaign comes from working and middle-class families right here at home.”
The fundraising numbers add to a growing list of indicators pointing to the strength of Smith’s campaign and the breadth of the coalition behind it. Smith was the first candidate to file nomination papers and collected the largest number of approved nomination signatures among all candidates seeking a place on the ballot. Hundreds of volunteers, including Smith himself, have knocked more than 6,100 doors across the District, a number that continues to grow daily under a coordinated canvassing plan.
Brad didn’t start with a built-in relationship to the Democratic Party’s established network. He built his support with partisan and nonpartisan elected officials the same way he’s approached gaining support from voters across the district: by reaching out to them, listening, and learning.
That approach has earned the support of over 30 of Wisconsin’s most respected Democratic and independent leaders, including state legislators, mayors, county supervisors, and former congressional candidates. It has also built a strong grassroots organization, with volunteer captains in 9 of the District’s 11 counties and over 300 active volunteers canvassing, making signs, and organizing events.
“Every number in this campaign, whether it’s donors, doors knocked, or volunteers, reflects the same thing: people across this district are ready for new leadership,” Smith said. “We’re going to keep earning that support one conversation at a time.”
