Madison – The Wisconsin Legislative Taiwan Friendship Caucus released the following statement in response to recent developments in Taiwan:

“The Wisconsin Taiwan Friendship Caucus was formed in 2021 with the goals of supporting Taiwan’s commitment to democracy, strengthening the bonds of friendship between Taiwan and Wisconsin, and promoting closer economic ties. We are deeply concerned about the recent developments that forced Taiwan’s President Lai to abruptly cancel his planned trip to the Kingdom of Eswatini.”

“As members of the Taiwan Friendship Caucus, we are dedicated to standing up for Taiwan’s democracy and supporting Wisconsin’s commitment to strengthening ties between Wisconsin and Taiwan. Our shared value of democracy is a keystone of our successful partnership, and Wisconsin has reaped the economic benefits of our trade relationship for years. The democratically-elected government of Taiwan should be free to engage with the global community unimpeded and engage in cooperative relationships around the world like the successful relationship with our state.”

“Via resolution, the Wisconsin Legislature regularly reaffirms its commitment to the ties between Wisconsin and Taiwan. In a resolution passed by the legislature in April of 2025, the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate reiterated its support for a closer partnership with Taiwan. We are mindful of these ties as we are hopeful for a respectful resolution to the current situation so the President of Taiwan may be unimpeded in his work to engage with the global community.”
