Mequon, WI – Today, Mike Thurow, union fire captain and Independent candidate for WI-6, shared the following statement after federal agents shot and killed another citizen in Minneapolis:
“I could not be more disgusted by the senseless shooting of VA nurse Alex Pretti by federal immigration enforcement this weekend. Federal agents cannot be weaponized to stop Americans from practicing their 1st and 2nd Amendment rights.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara made it clear that the federal government is refusing to coordinate with local and state law enforcement. As an emergency responder, I know that there is nothing more important than earning and keeping the trust of our community. I teach my crews that if we lose trust, we can’t do our job safely or effectively. Federal agents including ICE have destroyed that trust nationwide with cruel tactics and violence for show, and they must listen to state and local officials and leave.
This moment demands action. Congressman Grothman has been radio silent, and the people of Wisconsin’s Sixth District deserve to know where Congressman Grothman stands. Let’s be clear: Congress must launch a full-scale operation into ICE’s actions and not one more penny should go to ICE – who is already the most well-funded law enforcement agency – until Congress takes action to protect civil liberties, stop giving impunity to federal agents, and expand training requirements for federal agents. Anything less is an affront to the American people, our Constitution, and the memory of those senselessly killed by federal agents.”
