WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) announced over $12.5 million in federal funding for airports across Wisconsin to upgrade terminals, accommodate more travelers, and increase passenger safety. Funding to support these upgrades comes from the Baldwin-backed Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
“Our local airports are vital hubs that connect businesses and visitors throughout the Badger State,” said Senator Baldwin. “As our communities grow, our airports need to be ready to handle increased traffic and keep travelers safe. I was proud to support these investments so our airports can grow and serve our communities, businesses, and visitors for years to come.”
The funding for these projects comes from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Terminals Program, which provides competitive grants for airport terminal improvements, airport-owned airport traffic control towers, and on-airport rail and bus projects that improve multimodal connections. Through the Airport Terminals Program, the following projects will receive funding:
General Mitchell International Airport: $8,000,000 to complete the redevelopment of Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport E Concourse into a new international terminal, a project critical for accommodating international air service, ensuring operational safety, and fostering regional economic growth. Senator Baldwin submitted a letter of support for the project.
“A new international terminal at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is vital for the future of our regional economy. Thanks to the leadership and partnership of Senator Tammy Baldwin, this critical economic development project is moving forward,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “Today’s announcement of $8 million in new federal funding will enhance the Airport’s competitiveness, making it a more attractive option for airlines, businesses, and travelers. By making this project a reality, I am proud we are creating jobs, opening a new front door for visitors into our community, and providing major benefits to Milwaukee County and the State of Wisconsin for years to come.”
Alexander Field – South Wood County Airport: $2,700,000 to reconstruct the existing 3,144 square foot terminal building.
“We are honored to have been the only general aviation airport in the state selected for this competitive grant,” said Jeremy Sickler, South Wood County Airport-Alexander Field Manager. “This award is the launch of a quest to raise funds for development of a world class facility with small town charm. Residents of the surrounding communities will be welcomed to utilize the modernized terminal as a gathering and observation space in the presence of the exciting world of aviation.”
Appleton International Airport: $2,000,000 to reconfigure and expand ticket counters and airline offices, modernize outbound baggage handling and bag make-up systems, and enlarge passenger processing areas to meet current and forecast demand. The funding will increase ticket counter and bag make-up capacity by approximately 45%, significantly improving passenger throughput, reducing congestion, and enhancing reliability for both passengers and airline operations. Senator Baldwin submitted a letter of support for the project.
“We are incredibly thankful for Senator Baldwin’s support in capturing this much needed grant funding for our ticketing and outbound baggage project,” said Appleton International Airport (ATW) Director Abe Weber. “This project is focused at supporting our continued growth while also making our facility more welcoming for all travelers and elevating the customer journey.”
